When you move from California, the house is only part of the picture. You also want to know where you'd grab coffee on a Tuesday and what a normal Saturday looks like.
I made that move myself, and I've been helping people make it ever since. So here is my Cookeville list: the places I'd build a week around, grouped by how the day actually goes.
Hours and menus change, so give a place a quick check before you head out.
Where I'd be eating
Most of my favorite spots sit on the historic West Side of downtown, close enough to walk between.
- Crawdaddy's West Side Grill: order the bayou shrimp dip. It's on West Broad.
- Father Tom's Pub: pub food, craft beer, and a serious scotch list on North Cedar Avenue.
- Fire & Vine: wine and dinner.
- Savor Cookeville: Southern and American dishes made with local ingredients.
Where I'd spend Saturdays
Saturdays here start slow and fill up with small stops.
- Cookeville Green Market: local growers and makers on Saturday mornings. Hours shift by season, so check before you go.
- Cookeville Depot Museum: railroad history in a historic depot on West Broad.
- Dogwood Park: a fountain and easy walking paths, right by downtown.
- Burgess Falls State Park: a waterfall hike about 20 minutes south of downtown.
Where I'd be exercising
I'm a gym person with a dog and a boat on Center Hill Lake, so I like options. Cookeville gives you plenty of both indoor and outdoor ones.
- Cane Creek Park: a lake loop that works for a walk or a run.
- Premier Pilates: known for small classes.
- Tennessee Central Heritage Rail Trail: flat and easy, and leashed dogs are generally welcome.
- City Lake Natural Area: wooded trails just east of downtown.
Where I'd have a date night
The date night scene leans local and low-key, with a couple of spots that feel like a find.
- The Putnam Room: a sit-down dinner out.
- 1854 Cocktail Bar & Lounge: a speakeasy on the historic square with signature cocktails, mocktails, and small plates. Evening hours, Wednesday through Saturday.
- Red Silo Brewing Company: Cookeville's first brewery, on the West Side, with live music and food trucks on site.
- 37 Cedar: live music on the West Side. Check their calendar to see who's playing.
Where I'd grab coffee
Cookeville has a surprising number of independent coffee shops. Here are the four I'd rotate through.
- Poet's Coffee: on the square, with a barnwood wall and breakfast and lunch to go with your drink.
- SoulCraft Coffee: on West Broad in the historic West Side.
- Vertical Coffee Company: a local favorite.
- Cream City Ice Cream & Coffee House: coffee and ice cream in one stop, on West Broad.
Where I'd be shopping
Downtown shopping here is mostly locally owned, which makes gift hunting a lot more fun.
- Market on the Square: gifts and home decor across multiple levels.
- Plenty Downtown Bookshop: an independent bookshop on West Broad.
- Poppie's Boutique: a local boutique.
- Cavin Haus: a men's and women's shop with an event space, on East Broad. Hours are limited, so check first.
A home near all of this
If this list sounds like the life you want, here is a home in the Buckingham neighborhood, minutes from downtown and Tennessee Tech.
1325 Bridle Path, Cookeville, TN 38501. A brick home with 3 bedrooms and 3 baths on over 3,600 square feet. It has refinished hardwood floors, fresh paint, and new carpet.
